About the Host

Geoff Chan has worked within the architectural field for over eight years, specializing in digital fabrication and computational modeling, with a strong commitment to design-to-production processes. In the digital age, the construction of the city is a critical view of craftsmanship and technology. Chan wants to explore the “Constraint” between human and robot. Challenging the varying relationship between the hand-made and digital-make, his works examine different scales of material deposition in space. Illustrating a range of media, specific themes, and meanings, his interest in new methodology leads to enduring works.

Joyce Chiang is a modern calligrapher and product designer based in Hong Kong. Educated in the discipline of architecture, she graduated with a Master of Architecture degree and is an AIA licensed architect. With a decade of architectural experience from her education to working experience, Chiang’s aesthetic is directly derived from her architectural work - with a modern, minimal and elegant approach. She also visualizes and translates designs in multiple mediums - from calligraphy pens and paintbrushes to working with laser-cutters and 3D printers.

HART/Beat Sharing #3 | On Art Adminstration & Management (Re-run)

Quite a few established institutions in Hong Kong have addressed the needs for professional training for individuals, who are interested to learn the role of art administrator and art managers, but there are very few continuous discussions and explorations for such demands. For this very brief 105 minutes encounter that we are to co-create at HART Haus, let us discover a few aspects of this subject matter:

  • How ‘all-rounded’ should an art administrator/manager be – and why the role is expected to perform in such a way?

  • How many types of art administrators/ managers are there in Hong Kong? – A general overview

  • The myths of the art world in the eyes of an art manager – let us start with a keyword hunting game

For further details, click here

LEARNING ABOUT ARTIST COLLECTIVES AND ART INITIATIVES – SHARING

One of the founders of the Tainan-based CHT.Art Project, Bouie Choi, takes another role as a Hausian – an artist working at HART Haus the studio in Hong Kong. She is now currently residing at the CHT.Art Project space in Tainan, together with Stephanie Sin, another Hong Kong artist. Thanks to the two artists, who will be the ambassadors showing us the current status and developments of the artists-run space and the project, through live video conference call to make at HART Haus in this evening. We are very delighted to have the other key members of the initiative – Frank Tang, Alice Wong and Ling Pui Sze – coming to the studio to join HART to meet you, to share the vision and values of the Project, as well as their experiences working for this collaborative initiative. While Jeannie Wu, Director of HART Collective, shall respond and interact with all artists working for CHT.Art Project, on the challenges and benefits gained from the planning and implementation of art initiatives alike. Besides Bouie who will be engaging the sharing, other Hausians will join our conversation.

Let’s explore the challenges and opportunities face by CHT and HART the two artists-focused collectives. We welcome all artists, practitioners in creative industries and interested-parties in self-run/initiated projects to join.

HART Hub#3 | A SHARING BY ART PRACTITIONERS IN HONG KONG

As the arts and cultural scene in Hong Kong proliferates, it has never been an easy journey for many local practitioners in the field. No matter whether you are an artist, an art administrator, or a representative from an art initiative/non-profit organisation, one needs to pass through many hurdles in order to see the fruits ripen. From content creation, seeking resources, to planning and execution of cultural events, as well as maintaining different kinds of spaces/institutions/organisations, how do we survive for the identities and roles we chose to take for ourselves? What are our priorities and values?

HART has the pleasure to be able to invite three insiders of the field to share with us their own stories and lessons learnt. Speakers of the evening include:

  • Jaime Chong, independent artist in Hong Kong, currently participant of our Social Studio project (Hausian)

  • Susi Law, cultural engineer of Art & Cultural Outreach, also an artist and curator

  • Jeannie Wu, director of HART Collective, also director of Hong Kong Archives Society, arts advisor

HART Hub#1 | WALK

“I would like to share the importance for me to walk. To find inspiration of course, but also to discover or to rediscover a place thanks to art installation. In my opinion, art must be an experience. Literally walking through the idea of someone is simply magic.” - Raphaële de Broissia

French artist Raphaële de Broissia will be our host of the very first HART Hub session - ‘WALK’.
What does walking mean to you? For de Broissia, walking is more than a physical action, it is also mental and transcending - it is where her art begins.

Join us for a WALK, and let’s learn more about art as an experience.

Life is a Journey |

Life is a Journey |

For his 25th exhibition: “LIFE IS A JOURNEY”, Antoine Rameau, a French artist calling Hong Kong his home for 8 years, has created a black ink painted collages series, that must be seen as a mural fresco.

Those 10 puzzle-pieces integrate strong Asian art influences: black Chinese ink painting, Japanese woodblock printing on paper (ukiyo-e) and the repeated circle shape, symbol of perfection (associated to the Moon or the Sun, the Ying and Yang…).

The cave-like stalagtites and stalagmites also refer to traditionally painted Chinese Yellow Mountains in Anhui province, that he loves.

Rameau sees today’s life as an epic underwater cave diving journey! From the day we are born to the last one, we all navigate in a long cavern-shaped tunnel and must avoid daily obstacles, up and down. Sometimes the path is broad and easy (happiness, joy, mindfulness…), sometimes it is very narrow and difficult (fear, sadness, phobia…). The key to a safe life journey is our own ability to be a careful and attentive pilot between those two extremes, highlighted by black and white colors and opposite papers textures, of the genuine, damaged and ripped 1930’s French “L’Illustration” magazines he used.

*This exhibition is a part of Le French May programme. For more details, please see Le French May website.

Location: HART Haus, 3/F, Cheung Hing Industrial Building, 12P Smithfield, Kennedy Town, Hong Kong
