We are delighted to invite you to an evening with visiting artist Sara Lanner (b. 1991, Austria), concluding her one-month residency at HART Social Studio.
As a visual artist and choreographer, Lanner uses the body to engage performance art as an architectural medium, translating different functions of spaces–used or abandoned, power dynamics within certain usage by communities, and as the centre of collective thoughts for framing diverse personalities. The performance INWEAVE demonstrates Lanner’s interim research in Hong Kong, followed by an artist-led sharing session. “Interweave” as a recurring subject in her performances, Lanner’s choreography combines histories of locality, found materials from the everyday, and her cultural experiences/clashes during the research process. Lanner therefore tries to pose a question: how can art deconstruct social conventions, while reconstructing them with care and social justice, promoting positive impacts for the future?
Date: 29 Dec 2022, Thurs
Time: 7:30-8:30pm (15-min performance, followed by artist’s presentation and roundtable sharing with the audience)
Location: HART Haus
This event will be facilitated in English.
moderated by Chan Sai Lok (artist, art critic, writer)
Ink is a unique artistic medium. Works by ink artist(s) and practitioners have always become the ways to explore the relationships between traditional and contemporary practices, and to study the complexity of the multifaceted contemporary cultural contexts. HART artitsts-in-residence Chui Pui Chee and Natalie Chu are graduates from The Chinese University of Hong Kong yet growing up from different environments. How have they learnt about Chinese art? How do they transform these concepts and expressions with along history in their creative approaches and languages?

Artist and architect Justin Hui will be sharing his new photobook “New Territories”, published by Asia One. The series of images from the title explores the changing landscape of Hong Kong's northern frontier, caught between its past and ongoing integration with mainland China. It is a journey across the ruins of fading memories of what once was to discover the meaning of home in a city that is ever changing.
HART Alumni Artist Tap Chan’s works of sculpture and installation explore boundaries between fiction and reality, through using numerous commonly found and unusual equipment. She collects tools for specific usage from around the world, and hopes to display these small working companions at the upcoming sharing session “Tool Information Kiosk”, to share with our audience and peer creatives her experiences and tips!
A salon is not a teaching course, but a cultural gathering for sharing ideas and making friends of similar interests. This salon will be led by guest art practitioners to share topics ranging from Kazimir Malevich’s Suprematism, Czech New Wave films, and the fictions of Bruno Schulz. This will be a cosy gathering for all-levels and all will co-learn during discussions. Reading materials will be provided beforehand and we highly encourage you to participate in all three sessions as a complete cultural journey.
The Opening Reception of HART Social Studio Showcase “Six Happenings” will be accompanied by “The Uncanny HAUS”, three performances by HART artists Natasha Cheung and Liao Jiaming, with US and Hong Kong-based artist Anlan Huang. The three artists use the heterogenous medium of performance in conjunction with lens based media to explore the theory of the uncanny valley, a model in aesthetics that suggests that objects that imperfectly resemble human likeness provoke a sense of unease or uncanniness to the viewer. Through digital and physical augmentation, AI distortion, and humorous personification, the artists invite the audience to consider how our identities are constructed through history, culture and it’s technologies.
HART is delighted to present “Six Beginnings”, the last group showcase in 2022 featuring works by six artists born in 1990s to 2000s, including new HART social studio artists Eunice Lai, Liao Jiaming, and fresh graduates of BA programme - HART Award recipients Natalie Chu Lok Ting, duo Tracy Cheng & Shera Cho, and Wong Kwok Ming from The Chinese University of Hong Kong and Academy of Visual Arts at Hong Kong Baptist University. The selection of works presents a showcase of multi-disciplinary approaches and in-situ installations, within HART Haus’ arthouse environment to incubate Hong Kong-based artists, and cultivate sustainable creativities, exchanges, and experimentations.

Join us for a mini showcase of imagery through the lens of JJM for a journey without prejudice, and allow our minds to wander and experience the works of a woman, who is passionate about how light, shadow and time work in relation to people, culture, architecture and nature. A connection is made between the artist and her camera, where she leaves behind her many identities and titles to submerge in photography that tells stories. A plain and simple objective that brings perfect coincidences to her lens words cannot express.
In this new edition of calligraphy course led by HART Social Studio artist Dr. Chui Pui-chee, joiners will be offered a more intensive writing practice with one-to-one tutorial from the artist. Conducted in Cantonese, the course is taught across 10 sessions beginning in October 2022.

Touching, Splitting, Forming;
Whispering, Lingering, Transforming.
In this experimental showcase, artists use bodies as canvas, walk through the feelings of anxiety as well as powerlessness, to express their feelings about different senses of the body. Perhaps some body parts may heal during the journey, while some remain lingering with us throughout the transformation.
Curated by Christy Hui, the key visual is an extension of her photography work from Body Canvas 1.0 series. This exhibition collaborates with six artists from various disciplines, representing their ideas on “body” in visual, acoustic and tactile experiences, creating a multi-sensory experience, which may reconstruct your recognition of “body”.
觸碰、割裂、形成;
We all have and only have one body of flesh, powerful yet fragile. Incidents left us with wounds, stagnated and frozen in time; words are rendered invalid and lost. How shall we embrace our shattered pieces, continue to breathe, and live in this world?
Curated by Gigi Tang, “Breathing Flesh” has invited three emerging artists, together with the curator, to share their response to the seemingly unavoidable pain of life through different artistic mediums including ceramics, lacquer painting and performance art.
Returning to the roots of life, may we all someday arrive at a place of peace, where the light gets in.
We all have our own ways of recording an instant - through writing or illustration, snapping or filming. Each instant becomes unique moments due to its geographical settings, structural characteristics, interrelationship with the surroundings, as well as one‘s perception. The captured moments linger in our minds, along with the memories they resemble. We relive the moments as we go through the records in different media, yet our impressions evolve with the passage of time or the change in context.
The showcase features the works of Anthony Lee, with a series of his memory fragments. The collection of mix-media pieces invites visitors to experience his stories through visual, acoustic and tactile sensations.
We are thrilled to bring to you our first Social Studio Showcase in 2022. “Trans/versal”, an open-ended idea that speaks about our individual experiences connected through a shared community, suggesting that beyond culture and place there is a common line that allows for shared human experience and our need for community that transcends artificial borders.
Thirteen of our HART Social Studio Programme artists will present their works, oscillating from paintings, sculptures, and installations, all created throughout the artists’ day-to-day art-marking in HART Haus.

Are you ready for more shows to come in 2022? Come visit our Final Project #2 - 𝙉𝙤𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙃𝙖𝙨 𝙃𝙖𝙥𝙥𝙚𝙣𝙚𝙙 presented by CIP graduate Emilie Choi Sin Yi. Opening on Jan 5th at 7pm at HART Haus.
𝘕𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘏𝘢𝘴 𝘏𝘢𝘱𝘱𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘥 is a novel written by Hong Kong writer Chan Koon-chung, depicting a dying man who has recalled the social turbulence of Hong Kong from 1984 to 1998, and interweaving the historical events with personal memory. Beyond the grand narrative, how can we perceive the complex historical trajectory through an individual? This exhibition unfolds with moving image works by Chan Tze-woon and performance art by Florence Lam, connecting as a maze of memory. It examines the unspoken present social discourse in the lens of two different mediums — moving image and body. Between the visible and the disgusted, history is like "nothing has happened".
