Time: 6–7:30pm, 11 November 2022
Location: HART Haus, 3/F, Cheung Hing Industrial Building, 12P Smithfield Road, Kennedy Town, Hong Kong

The Opening Reception of HART Social Studio Showcase “Six Happenings” will be accompanied by “The Uncanny HAUS”, presenting three performances by HART artists Natasha Cheung (b.1998, Sydney) and Liao Jiaming (b.1992, Guangdong), with US and Hong Kong-based artist Anlan Huang (b.1996, Guangdong). The performances share a similar vein using heterogeneous mediums of performance in conjunction with lens-based media to explore the theory of Uncanny Valley, a model published in 1970 by Masahiro Mori, a Japanese roboticist researching on objects that imperfectly resemble human likeness provoke a sense of unease or uncanniness to the viewer. Through digital and physical augmentation, AI distortion, and humorous personification, the artists invite the audience to consider how our identities are constructed through history, culture and technologies.

Natasha Cheung

Natasha Cheung (b.1998, Sydney) received her BA in Fine Arts and Visual Studies from the University of Pennsylvania in 2020 and her MA in History of Art and Archaeology from SOAS, University of London in 2021. She is interested in articulating incompatible assemblages of identity without reifying existing structures that seek to compartmentalize and invalidate contradiction. She sees paradox as a necessity and strives to make this visible and visceral through implementing installation, photography, video, performance, conversation, as well as drawing itself as forms of drawing. In particular, she is interested in the languages and belief structures constructed to describe sight and vision, and making visible how these non-neutral interfaces have contributed to continued colonial imaginaries as well as how to manipulate these languages to render the absurdity of our reality.
