Triptych – Gravitational Depths

Triptych – Gravitational Depths
2022
Oil on linen

A Triptych of Resilience and Transformation: The enthralling triptych "Gravitational Depths" welcomes the viewer to accompany the artist on an extraordinary journey of self-reflection and metamorphosis. Born at the intersection of the artist's diverse experiences – her time in the finance industry, her curious exploration of human nature, and her fascination with metaphysical states – the triptych delves into the complex interplay of opposing forces that shape our existence.

This evocative series, crafted in Hong Kong amidst the COVID-19 lockdowns of 2022, adeptly captures the shifting dynamics of a world in transition. Presented here is the third painting in the series, which features a powerful juxtaposition of two female figures: one ascending towards the sky, radiating energy, determination, and rigor, while the other gravitates towards the earth, seemingly in a state ofsuspended animation. These contrasting figures embody the artist's exploration of the tension between action and inaction, fortitude and vulnerability, and the perpetual struggle to transcend life's challenges.

In her artist's notes, the creator ponders the metaphysical and psychological dimensions of art, suggesting that it provides a temporary refuge from the confines of our physical existence. This concept is vividly illustrated in the triptych through the artist's intentional contrast of techniques. The background, portrayed in a flat, understated bluish monotone, conjures a sense of serenity, while the expressive, abstract brushstrokes that animate the female figures introduce a sense of dynamism. This interplay highlights the artist's fascination with the distinct separation between the foreground and background established by binary conditions.

"Gravitational Depths" aspires to transport the viewer to a metaphysical and psychological state, transcending the ordinary constraints of daily life. By engaging with the artwork, the viewer experiences a fleeting detachment from their personal existence, forging connections with others in a shared "universe" that extends beyond the mundane.

A study for Half-Life, t½

A study for Half-Life, t½
2023
Bismuth on canvas
62x62x10cm

A proof-of-concept painted study for the full scale Half-Life, t½ painting. Half-Life, t½ (2023) continues the artist’s examination of the fundamentals of painting and its deconstruction to first principles. The artist’s use of pure elemental metal in lieu of paint, continues in this work, using the rare Earth metal, Bismuth. Chosen for its lustrous, chromatic colour when oxidised by heat, the metal also holds temporal significance; An isotope of Bismuth holds the record for the longest half-life of any element in our known universe at 200,000,000,000,000,000,000 years. Half-life is the time taken for 50% of a quantity to decay, presenting a way to give a determinate value to something truly random and stochastic. The painting reflects on the artist’s experience with his own impermanence, decay, and the indeterminacy associated with our corporeal being. While many, many orders of magnitude less than Bismuth, existentially, we too each have our own effective half-life.

Rich is about the richness that life offers when one pays attention in the present moment. The textures, the sound, the layers of experiences, the colours, the lights, the buzz of people connecting, exchanging ideas and their hearts. The painting is a total immersion in the vibrant present. Tuning out thoughts, worries, past, future, it is an ode to what is.

Flying Heaven is about dance. Without movement there is no life. Stagnation constricts movement till there is no inner space for one to express itself. Hence dance is such a freeing experience. It requires courage to allow flow taking over, in a space where no judgment is possible. Being in this freedom gives me wings, and it feels that Heaven on Earth is an ultimate possibility.

《Flying Heaven》

Fairyflow continues the dance. It is feminine, spacious, flowy, flirty and as much empty as it is full. She creates her own boundaries where she feels safe, These boundaries are flexible, never rigid. Her space is what she wants it to be. She is free and contained at the same time.

Inspired by a Transylvanian folk song, Bloom talks about the blooming phase of a flower, or a human soul. When spring comes and the flower is ready to bloom, nothing can stop it from flowering. It is the law of Mother Nature. From the darkness of the soil, the journey through budding, growth and blooming is granted. Trust that.

Nicholas Wong is the author of Crevasse (Kaya Press, 2015), the winner of the Lambda Literary Award for Gay Poetry, and Besiege Me (Noemi Press, 2021). He is also the recipient of the Australian Book Review’s Peter Porter Poetry Prize. His has contributed writings to projects by the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and Manchester International Festival. He currently translates poetry by contemporary Taiwanese poet Sun Tzu-Ping.

Nicholas has a background in English poetry writing, but the dimension of the page starts to bore him. He attempts to explore ways to creatively "translate" his own works into visual mediums. His visual outputs to be made during his time at HART Haus may be text-based, text-integrated, or text-induced, with an emphasis on the dynamics between imagery and texture, tonality and medium.
