HART Curatorship Incubation Programme (CIP)
is coming back in October this year!
First launched in 2021, this programme is designed for art enthusiasts and aspiring curators seeking to deepen their expertise in contemporary curatorial practice. The course offers lectures and workshops focused on curating contemporary art exhibitions and programmes, designing spatial narratives, and collaborating with artists and other professionals. This year, we will also include topics on managing alternative art spaces and curating outside conventional settings. Participants will gain insights into both theoretical and practical aspects of curatorial work, preparing them to engage with diverse art environments and practices.
The course offers a comprehensive introduction to contemporary art curating, combining theoretical knowledge with practical experiences from established curators. The program includes 7 core units and 2 guest sessions providing insights into Curatorial Foundations, Practical Skills, and Case Studies.
Programme Highlights:
Integration of theoretical knowledge and practical skills
Expert perspectives from experienced curators, artists, and art professionals
Mentorship and professional development opportunities for Advanced Learners
Curation involves more than just organising exhibitions; it is a practice of crafting narratives and facilitating connections between art and its audience. As curatorial roles continue to evolve, HART has invited curators from both institutional and independent backgrounds to share their expertise and insights on curating. What challenges and opportunities arise when curating exhibitions and programmes, and how can curators navigate these to achieve successful outcomes?

Programme Structure
3 Key Modules
With a focus on space making, this module introduces learners to a brief history of art exhibitions and together we will study a selection of art projects in relation to spatial interventions. Through lectures and exercises, the class will imagine collectively the potential of exhibition making.
This module delves into the essentials of collaboration with artists, curators, and other professionals in the field. It includes guidance on managing communications, documentation, and promotional activities for exhibitions and events, as well as strategies for effective public engagement and outreach.
This module focuses on curating within independent and artist-run spaces that foster experimentation, promote emerging artists, facilitate dialogue, and maintain close connections with local art communities. You will learn how to effectively create and manage exhibitions in these alternative environments, with a focus on the structural, financial, and conceptual aspects crucial for success.
*The 3 key modules will be extensively covered in 6 core units by the key facilitators and 1 unit by the HART team and guest speaker. For selected sessions of the core units, facilitators may bring in artists and art practitioners to participate in the discussions. Further course details will be provided at the start of the programme.
Advanced Programme
Designed for committed learners who are ready to excel and stand out, our Advanced Programme provides the additional mentorship support and exclusive opportunities to advance your curatorial career.
In addition to ALL core units and guest lectures covered in the Basic Programme, our Advanced Programme provides:
Two additional sessions of 1-on-1 coaching with one of our key facilitators, which are customised according to your career development, research and/or exhibition proposal for the course. These are great opportunities for learners to seek further advice in areas such as CV/portfolio building, career planning, curatorial skillsets development, etc.
Under facilitators’ guidance, each learner in the Advanced Programme will submit one exhibition proposal by the end of the programme for facilitators to review and provide feedback.
ONE outstanding proposal would be selected with an opportunity to realise the exhibition at HART Haus in 2025*.
Please note that:
Each Advanced Learner will be assigned to one of the two curators for each respective coaching sessions. Subject to the mentors’ availabilities, learners can reserve at least one time-slot in each consultation period to engage in an 1-on-1 session with their mentors. The 1-on-1 consultation will be an hour long, held either via Zoom/phone call depending on the mentors’ preferences.
*HART is pleased to offer support for venue sponsorship, marketing, and installation for the selected outstanding exhibition proposal. The specifics of exhibition period will be subject to discussion, and any additional support will be determined at HART’s discretion following the proposal review.
