(Chinese text below) HART Social Studio Showcase “#Ew! Normal?” presents an exciting opportunity to visit the space where 17 artists of diverse backgrounds explore synergetic art practices and create a community of their own. This particular showcase brings up the question of what it means to be ‘social’ in the ‘socially distanced era’.

Visitors will not only have the opportunity to view displayed artwork from each of the artists, but also have the chance to be welcomed into the private workstations of the participating artists. The showcase also consists of the dialogues and dynamics arising in the art ecosystem.

The opening of the showcase will be at 6pm, 20 November (Friday) with a collective performance; rethinking the community building ethos of HART Haus. The showcase will also include a workshop to reveal how both communal and individual narratives are created from participant photographs, and will occur on 28 November (Saturday). Lastly, online panel discussion and live studio will occur on 9 January (Saturday), and the online performance will occur on 6 February (Saturday). They will involve the participating artists and the members of the collective performance to examine a deeper meaning the social within contemporary art practice.

The showcase will open to the public from 20 November 2020 until 5 February 2021. Prior to visiting, make sure to reserve a timeslot 24 hours in advance at the top of this page. We look forward to showcasing the social with you through these final days of a most abnormal year.

“Be-sides'' is an experimental project. Our aim is to confront and reflect upon our own art practices through the audiences and the platform - “Ew! Normal?” during the 2020 HART Haus showcase, which has now been extended to 5 Feb 2021. This is a co-articulated performance between the Hausians (artists), docents, and the HART team.

After the first performance at the opening of the showcase “Ew! Normal?”, the second part of the performance has been postponed a few times due to the heightened Covid-19 measures. Part 2 of the performance is now scheduled to take place on 6 Feb 2021. “Bridging Be-sides” is an intimate virtual event to bridge the two parts of the performance. This is to be broadcasted via Instagram live through our social platforms and 4 artists’ personal accounts on 9 Jan 2021, from 5 to 6pm Hong Kong time.

“Bridging Be-sides” joins the first part - in-person encounters with artists through the docents in the studio space - and second part of the performance - online encounters and poignant perceptive discussions amongst the participants. “Bridging Be-sides” invites audiences across the globe to have a peek into the working process of four artists - BH, Doris Ng, Marty Miller and Jen Yoohyun Lee. This live open studio will last an hour. Here, the audience can have a real-time rendezvous with the artists’ work-in-progress, from the artists’ points of view. What is on live will be the hands of the four artists, busily working on their own painting, multi-media art, photography and narrative art projects. Yet, we hope to subtly blur the lines between participant and artist, therefore asking what it is to view each other normally within this strange time. This curated approach to the social provides a view of the artmaking process and evokes interest for Part 2 of “Be-sides”, occurring on February 6th!
